Apple released their newest iPhone, the 6S, on Wednesday at the company's Hey Siri event in San Francisco. Apple CEO began the presentation by noting how much iPhone sales have skyrocketed over the last year.
"iPhone 6 is the most popular iPhone ever," Cook said. "In fact, these are the most popular phones in the world. But more important to us, they are the most loved phones in the world...So how do you follow a success like this?"
Cook followed that up by debuting the newest iPhones with a video. The new phones come in two sizes, just as the iPhone 6 did, the regular 6S and the 6S Plus.
Apple added a fourth color, rose gold, to the line up. The phone will be available in space grey, gold, silver and rose gold.
The 6S is redesigned with 3D Touch. 3D Touch allows for a more delicate user experience. Rather than open an email by pressing it, 3D Touch allows a bit of pressure to be applied to open a preview of an email. If you press firmer, the email will open in full. The varying degrees of pressure will change how users open photos, messages and other apps.
"3D Touch allows you to take actions on apps without having to open them," Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, explained. "It is so much more direct and natural than ever before." Federighi showed how 3D Touch could be used to quickly take selfies, send a message and swipe across between apps. Rather than opening and closing apps in full, the swipe allows up to three apps to appear on the screen at once.
The 6S is built with a new A9 chip for maximum performance, this updated chip is 70 percent faster than the A8 chip. This chip improves the graphics,
The new "Hey Siri" feature was demonstrated by Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple. Schiller detailed improvements of the camera, which was improved to include a higher quality camera. A number of photos taken on the 6S were shown off to the crowd. "The skin tones are accurate, the depth of field is incredible," Schiller said of some of the examples. A new flash, up to three times brighter than its predecessor, is installed in the 6S.
The most impressive feature of the upgraded camera is the Live Photo feature, essentially a gif generating system. The live photos are moving photographs that include sound. However, taking a Live Photo does not require turning on the video camera nor do they take up as much memory as videos. The Live Photo option appears on the camera screen, a small yellow dot that reads "Live." Though these sound like mini videos, Schiller clarified that they are not. "These are still photos, they are not videos," Schiller explained.
For new accessories, Apple is offering charging docks in matching colors and 11 new colors for cases, including the popular Product Red line.
The iPhone 6S will start at $199. The 6S Plus will start at $299. As a result of these new iPhones, the 5S becomes free, the iPhone 6 will be $99 and the 6 Plus will be $199. Apple will also offer an installation payment plan.
Apple also introduced the iPhone Upgrade Program, in which Apple will sell an unlocked plan in a 24 month installment plan for $32 a month. With this plan, users can switch their iPhones yearly.
Preorder for this phone starts September 12 and they will launch the full line in stores on September 25. The new iOS launches on September 16.
